Good horse feeding programs include, and more importantly, begin with forage (hay) as the major component of the daily feed ration. Coastal grass hay is the most recognized locally available forage for the Florida horseman. Meeting the daily minimum requirement can be done with grazing, feeding hay or a combination of the two.
Coastal is an excellent forage for many classes of horse. The nutrient profile for coastal is quite good with protein typically in the range of 8 -12%.
Many mature horses with little or no exercise maintain body weight and condition on a coastal hay based diet. With exercise or training, the need for grain feed in addition to the hay will increase to maintain condition.
